The internet has become the primary source for information of almost any type for most people. For many, it is the only source. Virtually all businesses (or enterprises of any type) need an internet presence.

It is hard to remember how quickly this has occurred. Imagine this: when I posted my first website, WarOfOurFathers.com, just eight years ago very few of my friends and business associates could view it -- they weren't connected. I was: with a 14.4 kbps modem. I was jealous: a couple of friends had 28.8 kbps modems.

Today, everyone is connected, the majority of internet users do at least some shopping online, and all users "shop" for information daily. Most businesses have a website -- sometimes their second or third website.

Few business owners and managers have the technical grounding to evaluate the claims (and proposed charges) that are put forth by the myriad of site developers that besiege their in-boxes and mail boxes. One firm says it will build a website for $500.00, another suggests that your firm needs to spend $50,000.00.

The following are a few thoughts that reflect my philosophy of site design, and that I hope will be helpful to you in deciding what direction you want to pursue with your website:


simpler is usually better Always remember that website design is lowest-common-denominator design. You don't know what kind of computer the viewer is using, what browser, what browser configuration (how many tool bars?), what operating system, what screen size, what screen resolution, what color balance the screen has (beware those subtle colors…) the brightness of the room the computer is operating in -- the list of variables is virtually endless. For this reason, simple, strong, uncluttered design, wins over fancy and / or needlessly subtle design for the vast majority of users -- your target audience.

beware of developers who present their work on a laptop computer This is not the real world, what you are seeing is being generated locally (off the hard drive), not over the internet. Websites should be viewed and evaluated on the internet where defects in design that cause pages to load dysfunctionally slowly can be seen.

beware of the latest code-de-jour Many developers become fascinated with the latest flavor of code. While these technologies, Macromedia Flash in particular, can generate very iteresting effects on screen, the file sizes required often make pages so slow to load that few users ever wait to see them. Additionally, they often prompt the user to download the latest version of some software to view them. Why would I want to download software, install it (with all the attendant hassle and risk) just to view your website?

remember the target audience The purpose of your website is to serve a specific set of goals for your business or organization - not the developer's ego or vanity. I come from a marketing and advertising background -- not strictly design or photography. I will work with you to help you define what you want from your website, and how that can be achieved with your particular budget and current information system. Your site needs to be less about looking good (although it needs to look good) or about my impressing other potential customers with my work (although I want your site to be impressive) -- it is about accomplishing your business objectives.

beware of hourly website billing agreements You have a right to know, up front, what your website is going to cost. A competent site developer should be able to provide you with a document that clearly spells out the scope of the contemplated site, a development timeline, and a fixed cost for the work. Period.
